What the funding would support: Wello’s Building Well-Being with Local Food project brings people together with a vision for a healthy, well, and sustainable future in Green Bay, WI through food. For over a decade, the community of Green Bay has been proudly investing in a resilient local food system that meets the food needs of local people while simultaneously prioritizing equitable economic growth, and environmental stewardship. This well-being centered food system, which we call Cultivating Community, includes a range of initiatives overseen by the non-profit Wello that includes Farm to School, Farm to Community, and Farm to Farm capacity-building efforts. These initiatives have brought our community closer by making social and cultural connections across diverse groups and have also prompted innovations in local food infrastructure that have positively impacted our local economy - generating over $2 million dollars of economic impact in Northeast, Wisconsin since 2017.
Wello believes that where your food comes from and how it is grown matters. In Wisconsin, we have a tradition of growing our own food through backyard gardens, small-family farms, and on multiple acres of farmland. We also have established a strong Farm to School program throughout Brown County through the dedication and passion of our local school districts who have prioritized buying local food, teaching the next generation the importance of healthy, locally grown food (and how to grow it!), and who have committed to working together to continue innovating for the future.
That’s where this project comes in. Wello’s Kubota Hometown Proud project will engage schools, students, farmers, neighbors, and local businesses to develop a vision - together - for sustainable agriculture and a thriving local food system. We will utilize the funding to work with a team of agriculture teachers from Green Bay Area Public Schools and their students to survey the area, conduct soil amendments, composting, and other educational activities to ultimately prepare up to 4 acres of land for cultivation at the City of Green Bay’s Urban Barn/Urban Farm location on the JBS development site (adjacent to the Imperial Pride neighborhood). Wello will also use funds to purchase a selection of tools to support ongoing community-centric farming activities.
Fish Fries. Football. Farming. Wisconsin traditions. Add to that - winning! We hope that you will vote to help us win $50,000 to invest in local activities that connect our kids, farmers, and community together through food. Can you “beet” it?
