Job Title: Food System Specialist 

Job Status: Full-Time, Exempt (40 hours per week)

About the Position 

Wello’s Food System Specialist plays a vital role in the implementation and on-going strategic development of Cultivating Community, Wello’s well-being centered food system. The role will take the lead in the implementation of a diverse range of initiatives related to our local food system, including:

  • Healthy food access initiatives (farm to community)
  • Supporting the well-being of farmers (farm to farmer)
  • Expanding markets for local food and opportunities for local food producers (farm to institution)

The Food System Specialist will also work closely with the Director of Strategic Partnerships to nurture a network of partners at the local, state, and national level with the objective of linking local food system work to broader efforts and a wider range of funding sources. The Specialist will also nurture and grow Wello’s local relationships to ensure that our food work continues to be a direct reflection of community need. 

About Wello’s Cultivating Community Initiative 

Cultivating Community is a multi-solving approach to improve health equity while prioritizing food justice and environmental sustainability through farm to community, farm to farmer, and farm to institutional relationships. The Food System Specialist must also be a self-starter with intrinsic motivation to grow their role, be comfortable in making decisions, and have the ability to deliver a high quality work product within deadlines. The successful candidate will demonstrate food system experience and will be able to wow our team with examples of:

  • Willingness to engage in community-centered problem solving; 
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills; 
  • Strategic thinker and entrepreneurial spirit; and

Wello’s Cultivating Community well-being centered food system is centered on the following tenets:

  • We prioritize local food producers in efforts to meet local food needs. 
  • We acknowledge the systemic causes of food insecurity. 
  • We believe that efforts to address food security and food systems MUST solve systemic issues.

Key Responsibilities 

Strategic Partnerships (15%) 

  • Build collaborative partnerships across multiple disciplines with key stakeholders in food systems.
  • Facilitate public and private partnerships to catalyze food system efforts and pilot projects in the Greater Green Bay region. 

Project Management (60%) 

  • Develop action plans for food system grants and programs (objectives, implementation activities, roles and responsibilities, budget and resources, timeline, and metrics for evaluation). 
  • Support on-going Brown County, Wisconsin Farm to School initiatives and lead the Wello Farm to School Task Force. 
  • Serve on local and regional committees to advance food system initiatives. 

Food System Strategy (20%) 

  • Foster the development of innovative food system strategies guided by Wello’s Cultivating Community tenants. 
  • Leverage national and state level resources to provide strategic direction to community based efforts addressing policy, systems, and environmental change strategies. 
  • Assist community partners in leveraging relevant funding opportunities in food systems. 

Other (5%) 

  • Wello team members are expected to be flexible and to take on additional duties as assigned, according to the organization’s needs, team member’s skills and abilities, and in accordance with our community’s needs. 


A successful candidate for the Food System Specialist position will have a combination of the following qualifications. 

  • 3-years experience in food systems or farming and/or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Ability to effectively execute a project from start to finish. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining working relationships with diverse community partners.
  • Highly proficient in MS Office, social networking, and collaborative tools such as GoogleDrive. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively multi-task, meet deadlines, and prioritize multiple project deliverables. 
  • Strong passions to innovate, create, and discover new approaches to activate food systems to co-create community and economic well-being. 
  • Experience leading community-wide initiatives. 
  • Deep knowledge of the local community (Northeast, Wisconsin). 
  • Spanish or Hmong language fluency is not required, but a plus!


This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position with a competitive salary commensurate with experience ($45,000 - $50,000). Paid vacation; a fun, friendly office atmosphere; professional development and leadership opportunities; and an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated professional to assume a pivotal role in the growth and evolution of Wello. This would be a hybrid position with in-office and remote work. Our working schedule would include in-office days Monday/Wednesday/Thursday with the additional days to be completed remotely or in-office Tuesday and Friday.
